Quilts of Valor
Point Of Contact: CharleneR
In 2012, 47 yards of patriotic fabric was gifted to the American Sewing Guild in New Hampshire, of which I was a member. Previously, I had been worked with a woman in Massachusetts who was making quilts for her son's battalion in the Middle East. Our small group was excited about making quilts for service men and women and we gathered in our homes and started making quilt tops.
Researching on line to locate military organizations dealing with prior service, The Quilts of Valor Foundation was discovered. And from that, Quilts of Valor (QoV) Group, Bare Bones Quilters, began in 2013. We make beautiful quilts in red, white, and blue to present to servicemen and women who have been touched by war. There is no particular block or pattern used, as any block or pattern that can be made in patriotic colors is welcomed. We are ALWAYS looking for recipients of these lovingly made quilts. Please contact CharleneR if you know of anyone.
Everyone is welcome to join us on the third Wednesday of each month at the Comfort Inn, Dover, NH from 10am-3pm.
In addition, the first Saturday in February is National Quilts of Valor Sew Day, when everyone is invited to drop in to make blocks, hand sew bindings, press, cut or just be a runner to keep things moving. It is a great deal of fun and brings in sewers who have never heard of QoV. The more the merrier!!
Once a year QoV headquarters, based in Winterset, Iowa, introduces a block pattern to encourage other QoV groups to make and then donate the blocks so others can complete a quilt.
As of April, 2022, we have presented 186 quilts, some of which have been sent to locations in need of quilts for a presentation.
Also in 2022, The Ladies of The Lakes Quilters' Guild felt the QoV group should be part of the Charity Giving committee of the guild, since numerous LLQG members were attending the monthly QoV sewing event.
Welcome & Happy Stitchin'.
